Volcanoes Community Resilience Project (VRP)

The Government of Rwanda has received support from the World Bank to implement Volcanoes Community Resilience Project through its various institutions including REMA, Rwanda Water Resources Board, Rwanda Development Board, Rwanda Forestry Authority, Ministry of Emergency Management, Rwanda Meteorology and Rwanda Housing Authority, under coordination of Ministry of Environment. The objective of this project is to strengthen climate resilience, reduce the risks of flooding, and improve the management of natural resources and tourism assets in the Volcanoes Region of Rwanda.

The project will invest in flood risk reduction, ecological and catchment restoration and livelihood improvement areas. Therefore, for the project preparation contribution of these investments, resources to conduct several technical studies as well as to implement and manage the preparation of the project amounts to USD 6 million. The main activities under the Project Preparation Advance relate to consultancies to prepare for Component 1, 2 and 3 including feasibility studies and detailed designs, environmental and social assessments instruments, and other technical studies needed for the preparation of the project. At the same time, support for project management and capacity development for the implementing agencies will be provided. The project will be implemented in 5 years and the overall required investment financing for the program is estimated to be over USD 300 million for its full implementation targeting funds from various partners namely WB, EIB, NDF, and GCF. Project activities will be coordinated by the Ministry of Environment.
