MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT REACCREDITED BY THE GREEN CLIMATE FUND
Rwanda’s Ministry of Environment has been reaccredited to access climate finance for investments from the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The unanimous decision was announced this week at the 34th GCF Board Meeting in Songdo, South Korea. The Ministry will be accredited for an additional five years, facilitating enhanced access to financing that will support Rwanda to achieve its ambitious climate goals.
The Green Climate Fund is the world’s largest climate fund, and supports developing countries to realise their climate action plans for low-emission, climate-resilient development.
The GCF first accredited the Ministry of Environment in 2016 to receive between US $10-50 million in climate finance per project - becoming the first national institution to receive direct access accreditation
To date, Rwanda has partnered with the Green Climate Fund on investments worth approximately USD 100 million. In 2019, the Government of Rwanda secured USD 32.8 million from the GCF to strengthen the resilience of rural communities in Gicumbi District in the Northern Province.
In 2021, Rwanda signed a funding agreement with GCF and IUCN to transform the Eastern Province through climate adaptation, with a GCF contribution of USD 33.7 million and an additional USD 15.8 million in co-financing from the Government of Rwanda and project partners.
Since 2019, both the Ministry of Environment and Rwanda Environment Management Authority have received funding to enable the country to be well-placed to access climate finance through the Green Climate Fund.
Today, the Government of Rwanda has a pipeline of adaptation and mitigation investments worth more than USD 200 million being discussed with the Green Climate Fund. The reaccreditation will enable the country to build on its strong partnership with the Green Climate Fund and realise this pipeline of investment opportunities.
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is a global fund created to support the efforts of developing countries to respond to the challenge of climate change. The Fund supports developing countries to limit or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change. It seeks to promote a paradigm shift to low-emission and climate-resilient development, taking into account the needs of nations that are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. Learn More
