The six hydro-meteorological stations of information and monitoring system for the Nile Basin were installed in Rwanda
The Government of Rwanda in collaboration with NBI Member States jointly developed a detailed design of a regional hydro-meteorological monitoring system for the Nile Basin, captured in the “Design Report: Regional Nile Basin Hydromet Services”. The NBI Member States committed to share the data and information from the Regional Hydro-Met system in accordance with existing NBI data sharing arrangements to support cooperative management and development of the shared Nile Basin Water Resources.
The purpose of the project is to have a robust river basin monitoring system in place that adequately supports decision makers, professionals and other stakeholders in the development, management and protection of the shared Nile Water Resources; to achieve the shared vision of the Nile Basin Countries.
Under the Project 79 hydrological monitoring stations, 52 water quality monitoring sites, 43 sediment monitoring locations together with the Data Management Systems, awareness and capacity building, standard operating procedures and basin consultations were planned. The stations cover all locations of transboundary significance in 9 countries. On the side of Rwanda, six water monitoring stations were proposed, designed and validated (Gakindo, Gihinga, Kagitumba, Kanzenze, Cyohoha and Akagera outlet). The construction of the structures was completed and their installation was done in January 2023.
Kagitumba real-time hydrological station is located in Nyagatare District at Muvumba river and the border of Rwanda and Uganda with Coordinate: 01º 03” 08.52 S, 30º’ 27’34.19” E. the station measure, record and transmit the water level of Muvumba river to Rwanda Water Portal.
Akagera Outlet real-time hydrological station is located in Nyagatare District at Akagera river before meet with muvumba river with Coordinate: 01º 05’ 32.46” S, 30 º 27’ 06.47” E. the station measure, record and transmit the water level of Akagera river to Rwanda Water Portal.
Kanzenze real-time hydrological station is located at Kicukiro Dictrict at Akagera river after Nyabarongo meet with Akanyaru river at Kicukiro_Bugesera bridge with Coordinate: 02º 03” 42.95 S, 30º 05’ 11.52” E. the station measure, record and transmit the water level of Akagera river to Rwanda Water Portal.
Gihinga real-time hydrological station is located in Bugesera District at Akanyaru river and Bugesera_Nyanza bridge with Coordanate: 02º 17” 12.12 S, 29º 58’ 02.14” E. the station measure, record and transmit the water level of Akanyaru river to Rwanda Water Portal.
Cyohoha South (Shell) real-time hydrological station is located in Bugesera district at Cyohoha South Lake with Coordinate: 02º 20” 29.36 S, 30º 00’ 07.78” E. the station measure, record and transmit the water level of Cyohoha South Lake to Rwanda Water Portal.
Gakindo real-time hydrological station is located in Bugesera District at Rweru lake with Coordinate: 02º 20” 37.83 S, 30º 18’ 05.09” E. the station measure, record and transmit the water level of Rweru lake to Rwanda Water Portal.
The six real time hydrological stations have been installed in Rwanda by NBI through Ministry of Environment and Rwanda Water Resources Board. The benefit of these type of real-time hydrological stations, is to have authentic and direct information’s corrected via two transmission systems general Packet Radio Service (GRPS) and satellite technology, providing data used for planning, designing and operating of hydraulic structures, providing the information in order to deliver security for people and property against water-related hazards, particularly floods and droughts, also informing and educating the public and decision-makers.
